The huge tunnel, which probably took more than a month to build according to cops, led from an apartment building directly into the evidence room of the High Court in the Montenegrin capital Podgorica.

Police say that the crooks took advantage of a summer break to rent a nearby apartment and dig the tunnel to the evidence room which they finally entered at the weekend.

The tunnel was discovered when staff turned up for work on Monday, 11th September, and realised that the evidence room had been ransacked.

An investigation revealed that the apartment had been rented out at the end of July and that the owner had never met her new tenants before. It turned out that the paperwork they used in order to rent the property was forged and police are attempting to identify the suspects.

The motive remains a mystery as police say that not much appears to have been removed from the evidence room.

They speculated that the real motivation for the tunnel had been to possibly try and free a prisoner being brought the court building and added that all possible motives are being investigated.

Dritan Abrazovic, the Prime Minister of Montenegro, said: “I think that this could not have been done without helpers within the High Court. We are on the right track for the investigation to reach a speedy conclusion. I think the main thing is that this intention to break into the depot appears to have been foiled. We will now seek to find who is responsible.”

President of the High Court in Podgorica, Boris Savic, confirmed in a press conference that almost nothing was missing and also repeated that he believed the real motive was an attempted escape.

The investigation is ongoing.
