Vedrana Polelar, 26, – from the village of Laslovo, Croatia – shares her farming experiences with her thousands of Instagram followers, hoping to inspire other women.

She says she fell in love with farming life when her dad became a grain grower when she was just eight years old.

Just eight years later, she obtained 15 hectares of land and began working it herself.

Now ten years later, she cultivates 24 hectares of land and her Instagram site regularly features snaps of her driving tractors or hauling bales of hay around.

She explained: “My dad was the initiator of the idea for me to engage in agriculture.

“Of course, it wasn’t my plan, but with my dad, I fell in love with this job. When I joined him, he had already been growing grain for ten years.”

Vedrana explained how cynical friends at first thought she was only going into the industry to get her hands on generous state handouts for food growers.

She told local media: “When I said that I was opening my own farm, my acquaintances looked at me in disbelief, they thought that I was only doing it for the incentives and that my dad would certainly do everything for me. These are our prejudices.

“In other neighbouring countries, for example, in Italy, there is an incredible number of young girls who run their own cow or pig farms and cultivate the land.

“It is quite normal there.

“Although there are still those in our country who are surprised by young agricultural women, I believe that everyone is becoming aware that these jobs are easy for girls as well.”

Vedrana – who has a degree in farm engineering – tells how men are often surprised that a well-groomed blonde with painted nails can drive a tractor.

But she said: “Taking care of myself is very important to me. Both physical and mental.

“Just because I do dirty work doesn’t mean I should ignore being a woman.

“For me, femininity is an inner feeling.

“A woman who knows how to show self-confidence and self-belief is feminine.

“Even when I’m dirty from head to toe, I feel comfortable in my own skin.”
