A brute who raped and throttled a teenage girl on a beach has been found dead at the same spot more than 30 years later.

The grim twist happened when the body of Thanasis Karaplios, 56, washed up on the Rahes Fthiotida coast in central Greece on 7th July.

Karaplios, reports local media, had been attempting to save a 64-year-old woman from the sea but they both drowned.

Bizarrely the former fisherman was found dead just 20 metres (65 feet) from where he carried out the brutal rape and murder of a 17-year-old student 33 years ago.

A court heard how in 1990 he raped her and then choked her to death before brutally crushing her head with a heavy planter.

Karaplios confessed to the savage crime and was jailed for life, according to local media.

The killer was only released from jail 13 years ago and has since lived with his parents.

In a statement for Greek media, Karaplios’ lawyer Alexis Kougias commented: “It seems this case is really incredible.

“It seems that there is a higher power that determines everything.

“Thirty-three years ago, a mother and father came to the office and asked me to defend their child who was sentenced to life in prison.

“When I asked them what it was about, they told me that he was facing charges of manslaughter and rape.

“He tried to rape a 17-year-old girl who was a descendant of the most elite family in the area, who fell in love with him and this whole drama happened.

“When I met him, he was a very young child and suffered in prison.”
